Ski Boot Maintenance 101: How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Boots

Updated: Mar 19

You want your ski boots to last for as long as possible. That means taking care of them, not only when they're on your feet during the snowy season but when you put them away at the end of the season. Take a look at these tips that can help you extend the lifespan of your boots and ensure that they keep working for you as long as possible.

Getting Your Ski Boots Ready for Storage

At the end of the season, it's time to tuck your ski boots away for next year. To extend your ski boots' lifespan, you don't just want to toss them in your closet and leave them until next year arrives. Instead, make sure you take them apart, clean them, and allow them to dry before reassembling and buckling them back up to keep them in great shape so that they're ready to use when you pull them out again.

Inspect for Wear and Tear or Damage

Before you put away your ski boots, make sure you look them over. Check them for wear and tear on the soles and the tread, and take steps to replace them before next year if they are starting to wear thin.

Take Out the Liners and Allow to Dry

Remove the liners from the shell, and the footbeds from the liners, and let them dry out completely. You don't want any lingering moisture in your ski boots over the winter months! If you notice any smells in the liners, use a disinfectant spray to get them completely clean. Make sure you let them dry completely before putting them back in the boots.

Clean with a Damp Cloth if Needed

If you see signs of dirt and grit that you need to remove, clean carefully with a damp cloth and mild cleanser. Allow them to dry completely before you reassemble the boots and put them up for next year.

Keep Your Ski Boots Dry

When you store your ski boots, make sure you store them in a location where they will stay dry through the season. Avoid areas with high humidity or places where they might get wet: the back corner of a leaking shed or a damp basement, for example. Wet ski boots could end up molded, which could shorten their lifespan and speed replacement. Not only that, ongoing dampness can make the materials in your boots break down faster. Choose a clean, dry location, ideally one with moderate temperatures.

Buckle Your Boots for Storage

Always buckle your boots before storage of any length, both during the season and in the offseason. This allows the shell to keep its shape and helps to stop the shell from distorting.
